[Image taken 11.6.21] York Stadium Leisure Complex next to the LNER Community Stadium, Kathryn Avenue, Huntington, York. (The streetview dates from some years ago and shows the previous leisure centre.) There is too little seating here. Incredibly for a brand new facility there are just two places to sit. Both times we had to share with smokers. The seating such as there is does enable people in wheelchairs to sit sociably next to people who are not. This is not always the case - think pub-style fixed seating/tables. (There are some designs with a gap at one end for people in wheelchairs.) There was a constant stream of predominantly two sorts of groups while I was there. There were parents with very young children - the new leisure complex has pool areas for youngsters. There were people with grey hair. I am incredulous that the people who design these spaces do not have direct experience of or have seen that families use outdoor seating spaces for a variety of reasons. Eating a snack after exercise. Looking at the books borrowed from the library. 'Stowing' of kit used or books borrowed. 'Adjusting' or 'readying' of clothing (sun hats today, rain gear at other times, gloves in winter). Retired people may not have to be anywhere so some here today (covid testing, for other health services, a swim) might, have got a drink from the coffee machine (the cafe is not yet open) and enjoyed the good weather. As it was with the two areas of seating in use there was no option for dwelling and relaxing. There is space for more seating. Plus, it seems to me, seating can fulfil the function of the bollards - but be dual purpose and give a rather more welcoming feeling. Benches could also be installed alongside the green mounds in the background. Behind the photographer, there is a large planter. This could have been designed like the one (not shown) 50m beyond those green hillocks. It is a raised bed with the edges at the height and depth to be used as seating. Other issue here today: #170063.
